يعود موطنها الأصلي الى أمريكا الاستوائية ، أو الهند الغربية ، كما وُجدت كذلك في الإكوادور ، وبيرو ، وأمريكا الشمالية، أمّا في الوقت الحالي فإنّها تُزرع في مناطق مختلفة من العالم . هي شجرة دائمة الخضرة ، قد تكون متساقطة في بعض الاحيان ، متوسطة الحجم ، ذات موسم أزهار طويل ، يصل إرتفاعها الى 7 أمتار تتوزع غالباً في المناطق الاستوائية وشبه استوائية في العالم ، من أشجار فاكهة المناطق الحارة ، تتميز بتحملها لدرجات الحرارة العالية ودرجات الحرارة المنخفضة ، وتتميز ثمرة القشطة الهندية بلونها الأخضر الفاتح ، وشكلها الكروي المخروطي ، ولُبها فهو أبيض اللون حلو الطعم مع القليل من الحموضة ، وبذورها كبيرة الحجم ، وقليلة العدد ، والتي يتراوح لونها ما بين البني والأسود ، وتزن الحبة الواحدة من القشطة ما بين مائة وخمسين إلى خمسمائة غرام ، وتتميز أيضاً بمنظرها الجميل ، فمن الممكن أن تستخدم هذه الشجرة في تزيين الحدائق ، وتستخدم المجتمعات الأصلية في إفريقيا وأمريكا الجنوبية هذا النبات على نطاق واسع في الطب الشعبي.
