موطن هذا النبات المكسيك وأمريكا الوسطى. وهو نبات شجيري متوسط الحجم يصل ارتفاعه إلى 150 سم. وفروعه نحيلة خضراء غامقة اللون، والأوراق بيضوية مكسوة بشعر قاس.

وتتألف النورة من مجموعة من الأزهار الصغيرة في رؤوس، وتتباين في ألوانها ما بين الزهري والأصفر والأحمر والبرتقالي. وللأوراق والأزهار التي تظهر معظم أيام السنة رائحة عطرية قوية. والثمار توتية خضراء تتحول إلى اللون الأسود عند النضج. وأجزاء النبات جميعها سامة، وخاصة الثمار.

1. يتحمل نبات اللأنتانا درجات الحرارة المرتفعة، وأشعة الشمس، لكن نموه يجود في ظروف الرطوبة النسبية المرتفعة.
2. يتحمل الملوحة المعتدلة ويمكنه النمو في أي نوع من التربة. وهناك عدد من الأصناف المتاحة مثل "فابيوال" ذي الأزهار الصفراء والحمراء والوردية، والصنف "نانا" ذي الأزهار الصفراء والبرتقالية والحمراء التي تظهر على الرأس نفسه، وصنف "رادييشن" ذو الأزهار البرتقالية والحمراء. وهذا النبات أحد أقارب النوع الذي يعد أكثر تحملاً للجفاف لكنه أقل تحملاً للصقيع.
