ينتشر في شرق إفريقيا المدارية وفي الشرق الأقصى في بولينيسياالفرنسية. وهو شجيرة أو شجرة صغيرة مقاومة للحرارة. وينمو النبات حتىارتفاع واتساع 5 أمتار. وهو نبات دائم الخضرة ذو شكل مخروطي وتاجمفتوح. والأوراق متقابلة كاملة الحافة وتحمل كل ثلاث أوراق على فرع واحد. والأزهار زرقاء بنفسجية ذات أسدية طويلة ومحمولة على عناقيد طولهاحوالي 18 سم. وتظهر الأزهار في مايو وتبقى على النبات حتى سبتمبر. والثمرة لحمية خضراء تشبه العنبة. ويتم الإكثار بواسطة العقل. وللنبات جذروتدي. ويحتاج إلى الري الكافي والرطوبة العالية لكون موطنه مداري. وللنبات المقدرة على تحمل بعض الجفاف، والحرارة والملوحة. ويوجد صنفانمن هذا النبات يستخدمان بوصفهما نباتات زينة، وأوراقه حمراء قاتمة إلىأرجوانية في السطح السفلي. والصنف ذو الأوراق ذات اللون الأبيض الأخضر. وللنبات استخدامات عدة تشمل: الزراعة بوصفه نموذجاً فردياً،والزراعة في مجموعات كثيفة، وبوصفه سياجاً نباتياً وفي المساحات العامةوالمفتوحة وفي المنتزهات وفي الحدائق الخاصة.
