موطنه كوبا، وهو نبات شجيري كثيف، طويل ومستدير الشكل، دائمالخضرة، ومن أسمائه الشائعة بيرقرنا، ويصل ارتفاعه إلى 3 أمتار وعرضهإلى نحو ذلك، وعند اكتمال نموه يبدو كالشجرة، وهو ذو جذوع عدة نحيلة. وأبدى نجاحاً ملموساً في السنوات الأخيرة في الحدائق والمنتزهات،وكذلك في المناطق الحضرية في المدن. والورقة جلدية بيضوية الشكل طولها10 سم، خضراء غير فاتحة ولا غامقة سطحها الظاهر مخملي. والأزهارحمراء قرمزية، نجمية الشكل، والبتلات خمس، والأسدية صفراء اللون،ويزهر النبات في فصل الصيف وتظهر الأزهار في عناقيد. ويفضل النموتحت أشعة الشمس المباشرة، غير أنه يحتمل التظليل الجزئي، كما يفضلالنمو في الأماكن غير المعرضة للصقيع. وفي الأماكن المعرضة للبردالشديد، يصبح النبات شبه مساقط للأوراق، أما السوق فتتحمل انخفاضدرجة الحرارة. ويحتاج إلى الري المنتظم وخاصة في أواخر الربيع وفصلالصيف. ويتحمل أنواعاً من الترب الفقرية والجافة ما دام صرفها جيداً. وتظهرالأزهار على نموات الموسم الحالي، ولذا يمكن تقليم النبات في أيوقت من السنة. وتحتوي أجزاء النبات جميعها على مركبات سامة. ويتكاثربالعقل في فصل الربيع. ويسمد باستخدام الأسمدة بطيئة التحلل مرتينإلى أربع مرات في السنة لتحسين مظهره. والجاتروفا شجيرة رائعة المنظرلجمال أزهارها، ولذا فهو صالح في عمليات التنسيق للاستخدام بوصفهنباتاً مميزاً لافتاً للنظر أو سياجاً شجيرياً. وهو أيضاً مناسب للزراعةبوصفه نبات زينة في مراكن أو أحواض في الشرفات. وهو مناسب للزراعةكذلك في الشرائط الوقائية المزروعة كالجزر الوسطى في الشوارع، وكذلكفي المناطق الحضرية في تنسيق الميادين العامة. ويحتاج إلى بعضالحماية من تأثير الرياح الحارة التي تؤدي إلى جفاف النبات.
