(الأرطى، والأرْطَى) هو نبات صحراوي متساقط الأوراق، ينبت في المناطق الرملية ذات الكثبان وبجوانب الطرق الصحراوية، وهو شجيري كثيف أخضر، مغبر أملس السيقان كثير التفرع، تقطع أوراق (الأرطاة) وعيدانه الناعمة ثم تؤكل كالسلطة، أما أغصانه اليابسة التي مر عليها نصف عام تطحن وتغلى بالماء فتصير صبغا تصبغ به الأقمشة والملابس فتعطي لونا بنيا (حليبي).
تنتمي الأرطــاة التي تسمى أيضاً (الأرطى) إلى الفصيلة الراوندية، وهي شجرة معمرة، قد يصل ارتفاعها إلى 100 سنتيمتر، وأغصانها الجديدة خضراء اللون، بينما أغصانها القديمة تكون بيضاء، ولها أوراق صغيرة جداً، وأزهار بيضاء وثمار حمراء جميلة اللون والشكل، وجذورها حمراء تغطيها قشور، بمجرد خدشها يُرى اللون الأحمر''. كما تستخدم الأرطاة كملونات صبغية لبعض الأدوية العلاجية كالمحاليــل والسوائل، كما تستخدم جذورها الحمراء لدباغة الجلود، وأغصانها كعلف للإبل التي تحبها وتصطفيها، فضلاً عن كون عروقها مليئــة بالمياه تجذب إليها الإبل، وتلبــي حاجتها من الارتواء.
