It is native to Africa and Southeast Asia. It is a large, slow-growing tree and may reach 20 meters in height. It has a dense, round crown, short, massive stem and drooping branches. Its leaves are feathery, greenish-oval, containing 10-18 pairs of elongated leaves that fold at night. The flowers bear small cluster inflorescences, which are long red and yellow. The fruits are velvety, like the color of cinnamon, which are smooth pods, up to 15 in length. The fruit is bunched between the seeds, meaning that the diameter of the fruit is very narrow between the seeds. The seed is surrounded by a sweet, sour-fleshy pulp. The tree has great wind resistance. It grows well in full sun in clay, loamy, deep alluvial soils, acidic soils and calcareous soils. It is sensitive to frost and young trees should be protected from cold. Although it is highly drought tolerant, it needs regular watering. Propagation is done by seed and by cuttings and air loops. The plant is susceptible to a number of insect pests, such as: scale insects, bugs, cutworms, whiteflies, thrips and beetles. The plant is susceptible to some other pests, such as: nematodes and bacterial leaf spot. It has many uses, including using a decorative tree for shade and a road tree and using it as a single model. It is widely used in parks. After this plant is established, it needs very little care.
