شجرة معمرة متساقطة الأوراق ، حجمها كبير ، تجود بالظروف المحلية ، سريعة النمو يصل أرتفاعها الى 25 متر ، جذورها ممتدة وعميقة، الاوراق مركبة ريشية والوريقة كبيرة بيضية. من الأشجار الأكثر تحمل ومقاومة للجفاف.
بذورها غنية جدا بالزيت وخشبها لة قيمة اقتصادية عالية ، موطنها أفريقيا . شجرة الماهجونى الافريقى تنمو في الغابات النهرية وأعالي السافانا.
لدى الشجرة نظام جذري عميق خاص بها حيث يتركز طور النمو لديها في السنة الاولى من عمرها في تنمية جذورها التي تمتد عميقا، الخشب لونه بني مائل الى الحمرة ثقيل الوزن متين جامد بما يكفي لتحمل التاكل ومع ذلك سهل التشغيل ويقبل التلميع والتغربة بسهولة ويستعمل في عمل الاثاث والات الموسيقى

- لحاء الشجرة يستخدم في مجموعة متنوعة من الاغراض الطبية في علاج الحمى التي تسببها الملاريا وامراض المعدة ويتم تطبيقه خارجيا لعلاج طفح الجلد.
