السرح نبات شجيري كبير أو شجرة صغيرة ينمو إلى ارتفاع 5 أمتار. وهو من النباتات المحلية في شبه الجزيرة العربية. وترعاه الإبل، وهو مصدرغذائي في إفريقيا، حيث يعد منه حساء وأطباق أخرى مختلفة. والسرحدائم الخضرة كثيرالتفرع، وله تاج مستدير قمته منبسطة، وينمو في المناطق الجافة في التربة الرملية والحصوية والسلتية. وأغصان السرحشجنة خضراء شاحبة عليها أشواك. والأوراق بسيطة، صغيرة، إهليجيةالشكل، وعادة ما تكون كثيفة، وقد تكسى بطبقة خفيفة من الزغب ويصلطول الورقة إلى نحو 1 سم. والأزهار في مجموعات خضراء مصفرة عديدةالأسدية تظهر في فصل الربيع، والثمار لبية حمراء تشبه الفول. وكانتالبذور مقدسة لدى قدماء المصريين، وللنبات استخدامات في تاريخ الطبالقديم وفي تربية النحل. وللسرح جذر وتدي وقدرة عالية على تحملالملوحة. وفيالحقيقة، يتحمل السرح الظروف الصحراوية القاسية، فهوشجرة تتحمل الصقيع والرياح. وتستسيغ الحيوانات كافة أوراقها وثمارهاعدا الخيل والحمير. والثمار حلوة المذاق صالحة الاستهلاك للإنسان. ولنبات السرح إمكانية كبيرة في عمليات تنسيق المواقع، فهو ملائم في برامج التشجير وإقامة الأحزمة الشجرية الوقائية. ويحتاج إلى أدنى كميةمن مياه الري، على أن الري الغزير سيزيد نموه. ويحتاج النبات إلى رعايةمحدودة.
