الشث نبات شجيري متوسط إلى كبير الحجم يوجد في أشكال مظهرية متباينة في المناطق الاستوائية كافة، كما ينتشر بشكل واسع في المنطقة الجنوبية الغربية للمملكة العربية السعودية، حيث يرى عادة على حواف الأودية بوصفه نباتاً قائماً ذا أوراق فاتحة اللون.

والنبات لا ترعاه الحيوانات، ولأوراقه خواص طبية. وعلى عكس النباتات الصحراوية الأخرى باهتة اللون، تعطي أوراقه الخضراء لوناً مميزاً للصحاري القاحلة. وهناك صنف أسترالي يدعى بريبوريا أوراقه بنفسجية برونزية وهو جذاب لألوانه الغامقة في الشتاء.

لكنه للأسف أقل تحملا للصقيع مقارنة بالأصناف ذات اللون الأخضر. وتظهر الأزهار الصغيرة غير الجذابة، عديمة البتلات محمولة على نورات عنقودية بعد هطول الأمطار في فصل الربيع، وكذلك خلال السنة.

ولحبوب اللقاح رائحة نفاذة عند الاقتراب من النبات لمسافة قصيرة. وتظهر الثمار ذات اللون الوردي الجذاب في فصل الخريف. ونبات الشت شجيرة متعددة الأشكال وهي في الغالب لا تتخذ شكلا منتظمًا.

1. يمكن زراعتها في الحدائق العامة وقصها على هيئة أسيجة أو أشكال هندسية.
2. وفي الوقت ذاته، فإن الشث بوصفه نباتاً جافاً، يتحمل الجفاف ويمكن زراعته محلياً في الظروف الصحراوية، وهو ما يثري الإحساس بالشعور ببيئة الوديان عند زراعته في مسارب المياه.
3. يجود الشث تحت أشعة الشمس المباشرة لكنه يتمحل الظل. ومن عيوبه أن جذوره الجانبية والعميقة تنافس النباتات الأخرى على الماء. ويجب تجنب إغراق النبات بالري.

The thorn is a medium to large shrubby plant that is found in different phenotypes in all tropical regions, and is widely spread in the southwestern region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where it is usually seen on the edges of valleys as a standing plant with light colored leaves. The plant is not grown by animals, and its leaves have medicinal properties. And unlike other desert plants that are pale in color, its green leaves give a distinctive color to arid deserts. An Australian variety called Preporia has violet-bronze leaves that are attractive for its darker colors in winter. Unfortunately, it is less frost-tolerant than green-colored varieties. The unattractive, petalless, young flowers appear on cluster inflorescences after rains in the spring and also during the year. And pollen grains have a pungent smell when approaching the plant for a short distance. The attractive pink fruits appear in the fall season. The sapling plant is a polymorphic shrub that often does not have a regular shape. It can be grown in public gardens and cut into hedges or geometric shapes. At the same time, as a dry plant, thistle is drought-tolerant and can be grown locally in desert conditions, which enriches the feeling of a valley environment when planted in waterways. The shade is found in direct sunlight, but the shade is dissolved. One of its disadvantages is that its lateral and deep roots compete with other plants for water. Avoid flooding the plant with irrigation.
