موطنها الاصلي أمريكا الوسطى و الجنوبية ( الأمازون) واستراليا وشرق اسيا وتزرع للزينة المناطق الإستوائية والمدارية وشبه المدارية . هو نبات عشبي قائم ، بعضها مستديم وبعضها موسمي ، يصل ارتفاعها مابين 30-60 سم وتفريعها غزير ، وأنتجت منها أصناف طويلة تصل إلى 75 أو 80 سم ذات أزهار بيضاء، اوراقها رمحيه الشكل زغبيه متقابلة على الساق ، ازهارها ذات بتلات حرشفية لامعة تتكون في نورات طرفية أو إبطيه متكورة الشكل ، ألوان ازهارها جميلة وانيقة منها البنفسجي والابيض والارجواني والاحمر، الأزهار صالحة للقطف كما تستخدم كأزهار جافة ، تزرع من منتصف فبراير حتى شهر ابريل من كل عام وفترة حياة النبات بالارض من شهر يونيو حتى نوفمبر ، وهي تعتبر من النباتات الصيفية والمحبة للشمس وأيضا لها القدرة على تحمل الجفاف و الحرارة الشديدة ، وينتج هذا النبات كم كبير من الأزهار التي يمكن استخدامها بعد تجفيفها لأغراض الديكور المنزلي ، لها إستخدامات طبية صحية عديدة .
