زهور النجمية تعتبر من الأزهار المعمرة التي تنمو في أمريكا الشمالي وجنوب أوروبا، يوجد منها حوالي 600 نوع موزعة في عائلة Asteraceae

في الظاهر تشبه أزهار الأقحوان بالرغم من انتمائها لعائلة دوار الشمس.

أزهار صغيرة صفراء من المنتصف و متفرعة في الهواء.

الوانها بألوان قوس فزح: الأبيض – الوردي – الوردي الغامق – البنفسجي الشاحب – الأحمر – و الموف.

تعيش من 5- 14 يوم.

يحتوي جنس الأستر على حوالي 600 نوع من النباتات المزهرة، ولكن بعض الأبحاث التي أجريت في التسعينيات أقرت بأن جنس الأستر يحتوي على 180 نوع فقط، ويبقى العدد الفعلي لانواع الأستر محل خلاف قائم حتى اليوم، الموطن الأصلي لزهرة النجمة هو أمريكا الشمالية مع وجود بعض الأنواع في أمريكا الجنوبية والبقية من الأنواع تنتشر حول أوروبا وآسيا. اسم هذا الجنس aster مشتق من الكلمة اليونانية القديمة “Aster” وتعني النجمة، وقد سميت بهذا الاسم لشكلها الذي يشبه شكل النجمة،

1. قد اعتقد اليونانين القدماء أيضاً أن زهرة النجمة أو الأستر تعمل كمصدات واقية من الأفاعي وتقي من سمها أيضاً.
2. يزرع الاستر في التربة الرطبة في الشمس الكاملة بواسطة البذور.
3. مع السقاية المنتظمة والتهوية الملائمة، يقلل سقي النبات في الشتاء للحفاظ عليه بصحة جيدة.
