الهليون هو نوع من النباتات الربيعية، ويعد أحد النباتات المعمرة المزهرة ويتبع للفصيلة الزنبقية. وفي بعض البلدان العربية يسمى " سکوم". كما وأنه يطلق على نبات الهليون عدة أسماء محلية في فلسطين منها حليون وجربوة.
والهليون نبتة معمرة رفيعة السيقان يبلغ ارتفاعها نحو مترين لها أوراق إبرية طويلة وأزهار جرسية تنتج ثماراً عنبية حمراء زاهية. تنمو في الأماكن الجرداء، وأزهارها خضراء أو صفراء بشكل أجراس. تنبت في الحدائق وفي البراري. تزهر من منتصف الصيف إلى آخره وتحمل ثمرها العليق آخر السنة.
الهليون غالبا ما ينشأ في الموانئ البحرية، وهو ينمو في تربة شديدة الملوحة لدرجة تمنع من نمو الأعشاب الضارة، وبهذا يحد القليل من الأملاح من نمو هذه الأعشاب لإنبات صحي للهيليون؛ لها مساوئ وهي أن التربة لا يمكن أن تستخدم لزراعة أي شيء آخر. 'التيجان' تزرع في الشتاء، وهي أول ما يظهر في براعم الربيع؛ الحشـَّة الأولى معروف أن سيقانها تكون رفيعة وطرية إلى حد كبير.
زراعة الهيليون شبيهة جدا بزراعة الطماطم، محب للأجواء الحارة لا يتحمل الجفاف لفترات طويلة، يتحمل الصقيع وينمو في مختلف الترب الخصبة جيدة الصرف و التهوية.

Asparagus often originates in seaports, and it grows in soil that is too saline to prevent the growth of weeds, and thus a few salts limit the growth of these weeds for healthy germination of asparagus; It has the disadvantage that the soil cannot be used to grow anything else. 'Crowns' are grown in winter, and are the first to appear in spring buds; The first weed is known to have very thin and tender legs.
Asparagus cultivation is very similar to tomato cultivation. It loves hot climates. It does not tolerate drought for long periods. It tolerates frost and grows in various fertile, well-drained and ventilated soils.
