البان أو اليسر شجرة قائمة سريعة النمو، وأغصانها مفتوحة ذات مظهر رشيق ويصل ارتفاعها إلى نحو 10 أمتار.

والبان أحد النباتات المستوطنة في الهند. ويتصف بلحاء سميك لونه رمادي غامق، وأوراق ناعمة جميلة،وأزهار عطرية الرائحة. والأوراق مميزة ريشية مضاعفة يصل طولها إلى 40 سم.

الوريقات متباعدة بيضاوية الشكل خضراء اللون محمولة على عنيقات قصيرة. والأزهار جذابة صفراء تميل إلى اللون الأبيض. والثمرة قرن يصل طولها إلى 50سم، خضراء فاتحة اللون، مخددة، وتحوي عدداً من البذور التي تستخدم بوصفها أحد مكونات مخلوط الكاري، وتوجد أشجار برية من البان تنمو على جوانب الأودية الصخرية، ويصل ارتفاعها إلى 3 أمتار. وتنتج أزهاراً غزيرة، والبان يتحمل الجفاف وصالح للزراعة في الحدائق.

1. تفضل شجرة البان النمو في تربة رملية جافة، وهي شديدة التحمل للجفاف.
2. تحتاج الى الري المنتظم، ومكان محمي رطب.
3. استخدامات البان متعددة، واشتق اسمه الشائع باللغة الإنجليزية من طعم جذوره التي تشبه طعم فجل الحصان.
4. تحتوي البذور على زيت للأغراض الصناعية، وزيت للسلطة ولإعداد الحساء.
5. يحتوي اللحاء على ألياف خشنة لصناعة الحصائر والورق والحبال.
6. تستخدم أغصانه بوصفها غذاء للحيوان.
7. البان شجرة ظل مناسبة للأفنية والباحات والحدائق الصغيرة.
8. احتياجات أشجار البان قليلة، وهي تحتاج إلى الحذر في التقليم، وأغصانها هشة ويمكن زراعتها لتكون سياجاً حياً.
9. أشجار البان ليست عرضة للآفات أو الأمراض.
10. تتكاثر عن طريق البذور والعقل.
