الثمام جنس نباتي عشبي ينتمي إلى الفصيلة النجيلية، وهو كثيف الفروع وله أوراق شريطية قليلة وشاحبة، أما سيقانه فهي خشبية منتصبة أو زاحفة.
أما أزهاره سنبلية صغيرة وبداخلها سويداء نشوية تأكلها الطيور، بذوره صغيرة الحجم ذات لون أصفر باهت.
